Welcome

Our primary objective at Functional Life is to support a culture where a healthy lifestyle is the norm, not the exception. Our definition of health extends beyond the mere absence of illness, emphasizing realistic capacities across the 10 domains of physicality & vitality.

In the current societal landscape, most individuals experience a life far from ideal. Visits to health care professionals often occur after injury or degradation has already occurred and the treatment encouraged is often focused on symptom reduction rather than restoration.

Functional Life seeks to address the current landscape by educating, mentoring and treating individuals, allowing them to live in optimal health.

What does it mean to be healthy?

At Functional Life, we believe that health stems from realistic capacities across the 10 domains of physicality & vitality.

Physicality - relates to the body’s ability to perform work through movement in the following ways:

Cardiovascular/Respiratory endurance - The ability of body systems to gather, process and deliver oxygen.

Stamina - The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store and utilize energy.

Strength - The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.

Flexibility - The ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.

Power - The ability to produce force through space in minimum time.

Speed - The ability to minimize the time cycle of repeated movements.

Coordination - The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a distinct movement.

Agility - The ability to transition from one movement pattern to another.

Balance - The ability to control the placement of the body outside one’s base of support.

Accuracy - The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.

Vitality - relates to the body’s ability to maintain an optimal state in the following areas:

Cognition - The ability to remember, recall, implement, plan, prepare and produce ideas.

Mental Health - The ability to appropriately experience a broad spectrum of emotion.

Social - The ability to create and maintain meaningful relationships.

Weight - The ability to maintain an appropriate body composition.

Sleep - The ability to consistently experience restful sleep.

Vital signs - The ability to maintain a healthy heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure and pain threshold.

Blood Markers - The ability to maintain appropriate levels of hormones, lipids, proteins etc.

Physical Capacity/make-up - The ability to maintain appropriate bone mineral density, muscle mass, tendinous and ligamentous strength.

Body Systems - The ability to maintain healthy and functioning body systems.

Energy - The ability to meet the appropriate demands of life with vigor.

As a physical therapist, my initial training is biased towards the 10 domains of physicality. However, to exceed in physicality, an individual must have adequate vitality as well. This duality pushes me to learn and grow in areas outside of my formal training.
